Obstacles to living ‘the good life’ in Spain

Initially, all the women were positive about moving to Spain, the negative associations of the idyll were absent and instead the focus was on ease, wellbeing and enjoyment: in other words, a place where the good life could be practised. However, in order for the quest to be fulfilled, certain obstacles need to be overcome. Booker (2004) presents four categories of obstacle standing between the central character and the quest’s goal: ‘monsters’; ‘temptations’; ‘deadly opposites’’ and ‘the journey to the underworld’. All of these represent ordeals of some kind: the significant one for the women featured are ‘temptations’, which appear here as succumbing to the trappings of a holiday-like lifestyle or being enervated by the heat.
